Oschersleben. Manthey EMA triumphs in the second race of the new DTM season in Oschersleben. While Ayhancan Güven (Turkey) celebrates his first DTM victory, Thomas Preining (Austria) puts his Porsche 911 GT3 R in third place, rounding off a strong result at the start of the season. The Porsche drivers had already secured two top ten results the day before, with Preining finishing fourth and Güven seventh. 20-year-old Morris Schuring (Netherlands) finished sixteenth and seventeenth on his DTM debut, ending the race weekend as the second-best driver in the rookie championship standings.
In bright sunshine, the three Manthey drivers started the first race of the new sprint season at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben from third (#91), seventh (#90) and thirteenth (#92) on the grid. In the first five minutes of the race, which was shortened to 55 minutes plus one lap due to the new synthetic fuel, Preining and Güven each lost a place to their rivals, while Schuring being in eighteenth place after the start phase. With a successful overtaking manoeuvre against the number 33 car (Rene Rast), which was struggling with technical problems, the young Dutchman quickly made up a place on his DTM debut. After the first three pit stops of the season and with all competitors having completed their mandatory tyre changes, Preining and Güven continued to rank fourth and seventh, while Schuring was able to move up one place in the pit lane. All three drivers were able to hold positions four (#91), seven (#90) and sixteen (#92) in the remaining twenty minutes of the race and crossed the finish line of the first race of the season accordingly.
For Sunday's race, the three Porsche lined up in fourth (#90), seventh (#91) and seventeenth (#92) on the grid. By the time the safety car was deployed after seven minutes of racing, Preining and Güven had each gained a place, while Schuring had worked his way up to fifteenth. Strategic decisions enabled both the #91 and #90 Porsche to make up places during the first pit stop window, allowing Güven to take the lead after entering the pit lane and Preining to move up to fifth place in the field. Due to a problem during the tyre change and a contact with car number 14 (Aitken), Schuring initially dropped back to 21st place, but was able to fight his way back up to 18th by the second pit stop window. After three flawless tyre changes during the second pit stop window, which lasted only six minutes, Güven, Preining and Schuring were in first (#90), fifth (#91) and eighteenth (#92) place. In the remaining ten minutes of the race, Preining initially managed to overtake both Rene Rast (#33) and Jordan Pepper (#63), moving up into podium position. The Austrian ultimately held on to third place across the finish line, while Güven extended his lead over Jules Gounon and took the chequered flag at the front of the field with a four-second advantage. Schuring finished his second DTM race in seventeenth place.
"A very positive start to the new sprint season for us. We did a lot of things right with Ayhancan and Thomas, especially in the second race. Both the #91 and #90 cars made up several places in Sunday's race thanks to the strategy and the pit stops. That's what defines us a team, and I'm very proud of that once again. I am very happy for Ayhancan today, he really deserved this victory. Thomas also achieved two top results with fourth and third places on the first weekend. Morris' debut in the DTM looks a little unrewarded given the results. Nevertheless, I am very satisfied with his performance. He made his debut very professionally and exceeded expectations, because the environment in the DTM is simply very strong. As last year's Le Mans winner and a very successful driver in recent years, it's certainly not easy for him, but I'm sure he'll continue to move forward in the next few races," explains Nicolas Raeder, Managing Director at Manthey Racing GmbH.
"Morris drove two really good races. He learned a lot on his debut and I'm sure he'll hold his own in the upcoming races and fully exploit his potential. We're sure to see a lot more from him over the course of the season. With the double podium and the lead in the team standings, we're really happy. It's a great start to the season and the goal is to take this euphoria with us to the Lausitzring and fight for the 2025 championship," adds Patrick Arkenau, Division Manager Racing.
With the points earned in the first two races of the season, Manthey leads the team championship with 63 points. Ayhancan Güven is currently second in the drivers' standings (34 points), while Thomas Preining is fifth (30 points). Morris Schuring is nineteenth in the 24-strong field of drivers and also second in the 2025 rookie championship with 57 points. The second race weekend of the DTM will take place from 23 to 25 May at the Lausitzring. Before that, Manthey will travel to Spa-Francorchamps for the third round of the FIA WEC season.
Quotes on the DTM race weekend in Oschersleben:
Ayhancan Güven, Porsche 911 GT3 R #90: “‘After the first race weekend, the mood in the team is naturally much better this year than last year. On Sunday it was also the first time that the race format with two pit stops was implemented, and we showed as a team how strong we are. Two cars on the podium is simply extremely strong. We also scored good points on Saturday and were able to make up positions in the pit lane on both days. A big thank you therefore goes to the team! On a track like Oschersleben, you have to be strong in the pit lane to make up places. Thanks to the engineers, mechanics and the whole team. I couldn't be happier after the weekend and my first DTM victory!"
Thomas Preining, Porsche 911 GT3 R #91: “‘It was a very good weekend for us and a much better start to the season than in the last two years, which was very important for us. We prepared as well as we could and were determined to get the season off to a good start. We succeeded in doing that – a huge thank you goes to the team, because a lot of work went into achieving these results. In the end, I'm sure there was more in it for me today, because I had a lot of traffic in qualifying and had to start from seventh place. Nevertheless, a fourth place and a double podium is a really strong result for me and the entire team, and I'm very happy!"
Morris Schuring, Porsche 911 GT3 R #92: “‘I'm definitely taking a lot of learnings and new experiences away from my first DTM race weekend. Looking at the results, they're obviously not optimal. But at the end of the day, I learned an incredible amount, and we showed good potential, especially in race two, where we were just a bit unlucky during the pit stop. So I'm feeling very confident about the upcoming races. Congratulations to my teammates on their double podium finish today, that was very strong. I'm already looking forward to the Lausitzring. We will now analyse very intensively where I can improve, and then I'm sure we can take some good steps forward."
